• WHO IS IN CHARGE HERE?

    Stephen Bell

A while a back I had to replace the microwave over the stove in our house here on the campus of The KEY Ministries Center. After the installation, as I was skimming through the Owner’s Manual, I saw something in the warranty section that surprised me. Under the heading “What it not is Covered,” I found this disclaimer: “Damage to product caused by accident, fire, floods or ACTS OF GOD.”

“What?” I thought, “With so many folks upset when someone suggests that Katrina or the earthquake in Haiti might be a judgment or act of God?”

    “Acts of God?”

Why not, “Acts of Satan (or the Devil”) or maybe, more appropriately, “Acts of Mother Nature?”

Who’s to blame here? Who’s really in charge of all this creation anyway?

I sure hope God does not get upset with our microwave. It will be history if He does, and GE will not replace it if this is the case. But how can I prove that?

Please, tell me what you consider to be an act of God. I know insurance companies use this same disclaimer all the time. Maybe we should have them make themselves clearer about what they believe to be an act of God.

In spite of what many believe, there are no so such things as random acts or coincidences. What kind of life would that be believing we are simply victims of fate or circumstances? We must believe there is some intelligence beyond our understanding that rules and has authority over all this earth and universe. We have planets (including our own earth) spinning around and orbiting in this vast universe according to rules of discovered laws of physics discovered by man. Who really established these laws? So if you are a “tree hugger,” don’t blame God for anything—blame Mother Nature.

The question is: who has authority over all these things such as the earth and weather? Some entity must be responsible—obviously.

When Satan tempted Jesus during His fast of forty days in the wilderness, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Jesus did not deny his authority, but simply rebuked him because He knew the authority was his when it passed from Adam in the garden when disobeyed God’s Word and fell into death.

But there has been another transfer of authority over the earth. It was executed when Jesus gave His life on the cross. It was confirmed when He said to His disciples, “Behold, I give you authority .. over all the power of the enemy.” He also declared, “I hold the keys of death and the grave.” This, of course was after His death on the cross.

So who is really in control here? Well, if you don’t believe God’s Word, then who?

Actually, the authority over the earth was passed to Jesus, and then He passed it on to His disciples, the present day believers. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue,” of who?

Us, the overcomers on the earth.

Throughout history, God has rendered judgment on nations and cities because of their unbelief and sin. He always gave them space to repent and waited to see what they would do, but eventually the day came for a wake-up call. Nineveh repented when Jonah came and warned them, but, eventually, they fell back into their old ways and were destroyed. Jesus cried out over cities during His ministry and warned them of judgment. (see Matthew 11:21)

Nations and cities are accountable to God for their behavior. Just see what happened to Canaan.

Why should it be any different for Haiti or for New Orleans? What are we thinking? Has God changed? He says not in His Word to us.

Was the hurricane in New Orleans and the earthquake in Haiti an ACT OF GOD? Does God mean what He says when He declares that: “he earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein?” (Psalm 24:1) Who is really sovereign here?

    You decide.

I worked Insurance claims for 35 years and basically, as I remember, an "act of God" consist of some situation that does not have the hand of any person involved in it such as a hail storm, windstorm, floods, etc. Many use the term "Mother Nature" which I don't use. Mother Nature, to me, is classed as one of the many daughters of the Queen of Heaven, not in any way kin to our great God. So: storms, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, lightning ignited fires and many such acts are certainly orchestrated and carried out by our powerful Lord God. Men can "tamper" with "seeding the clouds" and perhaps other machinations but God is sovereign in all things so let's not curse God when something man calls a tragedy comes along but say honestly "God allowed this, what is He saying to us through this tragic event?" God controls everything whether we like it or not. We can complain, moan, curse...or we can simply ask the LORD what does this act mean to us that are caught in it. Suffering comes on fallen people in a fallen world with many innocents caught in the turmoil such as the children in Haiti suffering for the sins of the fathers. God does not cherish destroying His creation or even damaging it or hurting the people in it. But God is not mocked. People sin, and continue to slip deeper into corruption of all kinds so it is no wonder we have Katrinas, Haiti, and a host of other conditions man calls "natural disasters". But I say they are not just natural disasters. God allows these things... are we really listening? Will we ever listen?

Stirring subject Brothers, Thanks for stirring me up. The word exhorts us to stir one another up and to provoke unto love and good works. Once again you all have made me feel like Elihu when he said his belly was like wine which had no vent. So I will vent some in this matter as God directs, I pray. When you mentioned acts of God it struck me like you(Steve), in that alot of things are just natural occurences and some things are either permitted by God or enacted by God. Trials of our faith is more precious than gold tried in the fire, as with Job. Man gets caught up in a blame game, not willing to fess up to his own mistakes or short comings and goings. Remember how the blame was tossed around like a hot potatoe in the garden of Eden. And as far as Job goes, look how things transpired with him. We read in the 1st Chapter, verse 16; how it was said that the fire of God fell from heaven and consumed his sheep. All that befell him was not judgement but a testing of his faith. In verse 19; a great wind came out of the wilderness and killed his sons and daughters that were gathered at their eldest brothers house. The Bible speaks of whirlwinds, I believe this is likened unto a tornado, on the coast hurricanes, that also spawn tornados. And what was Jobs' response?! In verses 21 & 22; the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. In all this Job sinned not, NOR CHARGED GOD FOOLISHLY. We all know that God permitted all that happened to Job, but satan was the one who carried it out. Thank God he can only do what GOD PERMITS. So natural man in that he cannot understand the things of God,because they are spiritually discerned, foolishly charges God in that old blame game he so much likes to play. The goodness of God leads us to repentance, the severity of God is something we will face if we don't. Judgement is coming upon the world as we know the word says, but it also says that judgement will begin at the house of God. And if the righteous scarcely are saved, where shall the ungodly and sinner appear. So it boils down to God being sovereign over all, and as 2 Peter 3;11:says, Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness. Praise Him for His amazing grace whereby He works in us both to will and do of His good pleasure, doing that which is pleasing in His sight. Grace & Peace
